I'm not even remotely a "woodworker," rather just a guy with too many tools who can occasionally put together a shoe rack or a shelf made of big box dimensional lumber (as long as everything is right angles and I don't care about seeing fasteners!).
However, I finally built a workshop recently and my wife thought it was high time that I start putting those tools she allowed me to buy to use.
So I bought a good handful of plans from FTBT, and this is the first thing I've really put time, attention, and energy into building, and you know what? It's totally awesome. Very much what I'd consider beginner level, but there are techniques that I'd never used before (using a miter gauge on my table saw, squaring up my 2x4s) that I'm now confident in and will take with me to other projects.
I built two of these. The first I wasn't happy with (there are small gaps here and there) and will stay in my shop to be used as a small work table. The second, though, was as perfect a thing that I've ever built and will go into my foyer as soon as I figure out what to top it with.
My wife is thrilled too and already has a list of other things she wants me to try my hand at (several of which she picked out from this site). Not too terribly confident about doing bigger and more refined projects, but we all gotta start somewhere.
To summarize, if you're anything like me, these plans seen like a really good place to start. Simple, you don't need many tools (can probably build this with only hand tools without much trouble) and a very inexpensive material cost so **** it up won't be very painful...I spent about $40 for my two attempts, not including the the top.
Thanks!;
